Understanding Children’s Grief and How We Can Help

Children’s grief is often misunderstood.

Young people don’t grieve in a linear way – they may seem fine one moment and devastated the next. This “puddle jumping” through grief is completely normal, but it can be confusing and distressing for both children and their families.

Our children’s grief coaching supports:

  • Loss of parents, grandparents, or family members
  • Death of friends or classmates
  • Loss of beloved pets
  • Parental divorce or separation
  • Moving house or changing schools
  • Serious illness in the family
  • Traumatic events affecting the child

Age-Specific Approaches to Children’s Grief

Ages 5-8: Early Primary School Young children often think in concrete terms and may not fully understand the permanence of death. They might ask when the person is coming back or blame themselves for the loss. Our approach uses simple language, play therapy techniques, and creative expression to help them process their emotions safely.

Ages 9-12: Late Primary School Children this age begin to understand death’s permanence but may struggle with complex emotions like anger, guilt, or fear. We help them develop emotional vocabulary and coping strategies while addressing any behavioural changes affecting school or friendships.

Ages 13-18: Teenagers Adolescents face unique challenges when grieving, often feeling isolated from peers who haven’t experienced loss. They may take on adult responsibilities too early or struggle with identity questions. Our coaching helps them process grief whilst maintaining their developmental journey towards independence.

How Children’s Grief Coaching Differs from Traditional Counselling

Traditional Counselling often focuses on exploring past experiences through talking therapy, which can be challenging for children who may not have the emotional vocabulary or attention span for lengthy discussions.

Children’s Grief Coaching uses age-appropriate techniques including play therapy, creative expression, storytelling, and practical activities to help children process their emotions naturally. We focus on building coping skills and resilience whilst honouring their grief.

Our approach recognises that children learn differently and need concrete tools they can use in their daily lives. We make grief coaching engaging and accessible whilst maintaining the depth necessary for real healing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Children’s Grief Coaching

At what age can children start grief coaching?

We work with children as young as 5 years old, adapting our approach to match their developmental level. There’s no upper age limit – we support teenagers up to 18 and can provide referrals for young adults.

How do you make grief coaching appropriate for children?

We use play therapy, art, storytelling, and other creative techniques that feel natural to children. Sessions are shorter than adult sessions and include activities that help children express emotions they might not have words for.

Will my child need to talk about their loss immediately?

Not at all. We let children set the pace and often start with general emotional regulation and coping strategies. Some children need several sessions before they’re ready to discuss their loss directly.

How long does children’s grief coaching typically take?

Our programmes usually run for 8-12 weeks, but this varies significantly based on the child’s age, type of loss, and individual needs. Some children benefit from shorter interventions, whilst others need longer support.

Do parents attend sessions with their child?

This depends on the child’s age and preference. Younger children often have parents present, whilst teenagers usually prefer individual sessions. We always include family sessions to ensure everyone is supported.

Can grief coaching help with school-related difficulties?

Yes, we often work with schools to help them understand and support your child’s needs. We can provide guidance to teachers and suggest classroom accommodations when appropriate.

What if my child doesn’t want to attend sessions?

It’s normal for children to feel reluctant initially. We work with families to reduce anxiety about attending and ensure the first session is positive and non-threatening. We never force children to participate.

How do you handle different types of loss with children?

Each type of loss requires a different approach. Death of a parent needs different support than pet loss or parental divorce. We tailor our methods to the specific circumstances whilst addressing the child’s individual response.

Supporting Your Child’s Healing Journey

Children are naturally resilient, but they need support to develop healthy coping strategies that will serve them throughout life.
